Hundreds Will Walk to End Alzheimer’s in Asheville on Sept. 15

Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s®:

The Alzheimer’s Association – Western Carolina Chapter hosts fourteen walks across central and western North Carolina during the months of September and October. The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. Since 1989, the Alzheimer’s Association mobilized millions of Americans in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk®; now the Alzheimer’s Association is continuing to lead the way with Walk to End Alzheimer’s®.

  • One in 10 people age 65 and older (10 percent) has Alzheimer’s dementia.
  • An estimated 5.7 million Americans, including 170,000 North Carolina residents, are living with Alzheimer’s, a number estimated to grow to as many as 16 million by year 2050.
  • Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women.
  • African-Americans are about twice as likely to have Alzheimer’s or other dementias as older whites.
  • Hispanics are about one and one-half times as likely to have Alzheimer’s or other dementias as older whites.

This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to join the fight against the disease. Participants will complete a 2-mile walk and will learn about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities, clinical studies enrollment and support programs and services from the Alzheimer’s Association.

PARKING:

Standard and handicap accessible parking is available in the public parking lot on Marjorie Street and at the Buncombe County Parking Garage across from the courthouse. Limited free parking in Downtown Asheville.  Parking Map

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS/PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES:

Walk participants will also join in a meaningful Promise Garden tribute ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. The day will include fun, all-ages entertainment and family-friendly music.
