Costume Drama: A Fashion Show is an eclectic evening of inventive fashion that has quickly become one of the highlights of the Asheville event calendar! Local designers compete for cash prizes in this Project Runway-esque show, with proceeds from ticket sales to benefit the theatre. This year, 20 designers will compete in four categories: Hardware, Light, Paper, and Revisionist History. The event will be coming back to ACT for the 2018 competition to showcase the beautiful and carefully created garments on our newly renovated Mainstage where the audience can capture every stitch and embellishment as it glides across the runway! This year’s Costume Drama will take place on Friday July 6, 2018 at 7:30pm. Tickets are available online at www.ashevilletheatre.org, over the phone at (828) 254-1320, or in person at the Asheville Community Theatre Box Office.
This year will be the seventh for Costume Drama and will feature returning talent as well as first time designers. For one night only local artists show off their impeccable talents and eye for fashion by using unconventional items and mediums to create garments that are truly creations to feast your eyes upon.
“We’re excited to bring the show back to ACT to our newly renovated Mainstage,” said Susan Harper, Executive Director of Asheville Community Theatre. “We’re using the new aisle that runs parallel to the stage as an extension of the runway. Models will walk a loop, and the audience will be able to see the garments more closely.”
Designer T.M. Ellis won Best in Show in 2016 with a paper dress made from the pages of romance novels. She will be competing again in the paper category.
“Feeling becomes a passion that connects to a vision, and from the vision you get a garment that is completely authentic,” said Ellis, when asked about her connection to paper as a medium.
Chartreuse has walked as a model for past Costume Dramas, but this year marks the first they will compete as a designer.
“The silhouettes of history are some of the most interesting and high fashion creations of all time. Creating a well recognized shape with a rare material will be such an interesting challenge!” said Chartreuse, revisionist history category artist.
Artists Joan and Keith Berner, Jen Canino, Tina Covelli, Julianna Hosmer and Sandy McDaniel will represent the Hardware category. Light will be depicted by the designers Ida, Gypsy Rose Creations by Rosanne, Terri Frue, Jon Pierce and Betsy Puckett. Paper will be portrayed by Art Blue “Bohemian Beaute,” Danielle Chaboudy, T.M.Ellis, AvantGeek and Kelley Ann Ross. Revisionist History will be encapsulated by Chartreuse, Miss Mannikan, McKinney Gough, Jenny Hall and Charlotte Cat Murphy.
Costume Drama: A Fashion Show is directed by Sara Fields. In addition to matching models with designers, Sara coordinates a volunteer team of local hair and make-up artists, photographers, and videographers.
