Bee Adams’s latest work glimpses into the vibrant colors of Asheville

From iconic local landmarks to tobacco barns, florals, and abstracts, Bee Adams creates signature works that reinvigorate and celebrate the familiar with masterful execution of exuberant color and exciting composition.

“I do love color and use it freely in my paintings. I like keeping my paintings fresh and exciting and use a variety of media in that process,” says Adams.

Working both in her studio and en plein aire, Adams has captured such important landmarks as Asheville’s Jackson Building, City Hall, and the Flat Iron Building, trumpeting these distinct architectural accomplishments in bold primaries. Thomas Wolfe’s home, “Look, Homeward Angel,” is also perfectly rendered and encapsulates Adams’s mastery of color. A similar virtuosity attends all of Adams’s work, enabling the viewer to be comforted by the familiar while enjoying a festival of unexpected color skillfully effected. “My paintings aren’t careful architectural renderings,” Adams says, “but vibrant celebrations that allow the viewer to encounter the familiar anew.” Whatever her subject, she is fearless in her interpretations.

Adams enjoys a steady flow of commissions, infusing portraits of public buildings, and even private homes with her signature whimsy.

Before relocating to Asheville in 2012, Adams was active in the Denver art scene for over 40 years, where she held solo shows at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder among others. She also lived in Brussels and traveled extensively throughout Europe, where she “took particular joy in capturing the intricate buildings with quick sketches.”

Adams’s work currently can be found at Asheville Gallery of Art, 82 Patton Ave, Asheville. Her exhibition “Colorful Asheville” is April 1-30
