Things to do outside of Asheville

The vast open spaces just outside town limits have the advantage of being somewhat secluded places and nice getaways from the rush and noise of the city. But remote does not have to mean boring, even if you’re trying to unwind. Whether to seek some peace and quiet or exciting entertainment, there are things to do around Asheville, NC.

The city itself presents no shortage of activities and interesting locations to visit. However, it is good to drive away sometimes, outside the too-familiar surroundings, and have a little escape from reality and everyday troubles. The region certainly is made for spending time in the great outdoors. Not too far from Asheville, there are plenty of opportunities to relax, take a breath of fresh air and enjoy fun exercise. There are places to take a hike (or bike) among rocky pathways, to swim in the lake or go after some whitewater amusement like rafting or kayaking, have fun at adventure parks, or chill out by the hot springs. You can explore the idea of picnicking, bird watching, admiring landscapes, waterfalls, and wildlife, as well as simply be one with nature for a while.

The area recently became recognizable due to the famous film called “Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri” which earned a bunch of prestigious awards, including Oscar nomination for Best Picture. Turns out the town seen on the movie screen was neither located in Missouri nor real. The fictional Ebbing was played by few picturesque places not far from Asheville: Sylva, Dillsboro, Maggie Valley and Black Mountain. So, the accumulation of tourists may be high around these parts for a moment, as authorities want to be sure to capitalize on the five minutes of fame. On the upside, this could mean special events and other attractions.

For another kind of entertainment, travelers can explore some of the roadside bars, lounges, and taverns that surely have their own unique charm. While psychical activities can make your heart pump blood faster, there are thrills associated with good old-fashioned money wagers that would work in a similar manner. There’s really no need to get out of the house to enjoy poker or casino games these days, for the sheer fun of it you don’t even have to pay. However, a visit to the lovely situated Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort would not be the time wasted. As a proper ‘multi-tainment’ center, it offers more fun games. They have bowling alleys, pool tables, arcade games and more fun stuff. Plus, a variety of spots for food, drinks, and live entertainment. You can stay at the hotels, enjoy the spa treatment or immerse in the luxurious shopping experience.

There are more things to do around the resort, or in the close vicinity. Above all, the Cherokee town is known from the cultivation of Indian culture and the preservation of 18th century Cherokee lifestyle. When in the neighborhood, it is worth to pop in for a visit and a tour at places such as Oconaluftee Indian Village (replica of genuine 1750s Cherokee village), Cherokee Heritage Museum and Gallery, Museum of the Cherokee Indian, and Cherokee Indian Reservation.
