3 Signs To Look For In A Failing AC Unit

Unfortunately, an AC system will start showing problems when you most need it. So as you transient into the hotter season, you need to check and ensure that your AC is working properly. It helps to keep your family comfortable. So what are the things you must do to ensure that the system is working well? You must identify any issue that may arise and sort it out before it gets out of hand.

Some of the signs you must look for include when the Ac starts producing strange sounds when there are strange smells, reduced airflow, or when the unit is not blowing out cold air. Also, check out the bill. If it rises continuously, it is an indicator that the unit is old and inefficient.

All said, ensure to have the system assessed and properly maintained before the start of the hot season. It would help if you did this during the fall and spring. Unfortunately, most people wait until the AC breaks down before they call a technician. This can really inconvenience members of your family. To avoid this, here are the signs that can help you learn more about a failing AC unit.

1. Strange Sounds And Smell

When you power the air conditioning, you should hear the unit kick in or some air flowing. However, the sound should not be so loud. Besides, when you hear some strange sounds such as grating and grinding, it indicates that all is not well. Also, when you hear the squealing and grating sound, it should ring a bell.

In some cases, the unit may emit strange smells. If it smells like rotten eggs, it is a sign of leaking gas which should be attended to as quickly as possible because it can cause a fire. Also, when you smell something strange, it could be overheating. The motor has coils that are likely to burn and emit strange smells.

Thus, any strange sound or smell should be checked and fixed to prevent the entire unit from breaking down and necessitating major repairs.

2. Reduced Air Flow

When you switch your AC on, you may feel some cool air flowing. Unfortunately, the flow may be so weak that it may not have enough pressure to circulate in the room. In addition, the airflow may not be cold to cool the room. This may happen when there is a problem with the thermostat. Also, it may happen when there is a refrigerant leak. Thus, if the airflow is weak, check the compressor or ducts. But if it cannot cool the roof, you may need to check the thermostat and ensure that it is working properly. Therefore, if it is working properly, just set the correct temperature.

3. Leaking Freon Or Water

When you come across any leakage, whether it is Freon or water, it indicates that there is a problem with the refrigerator. Freon is dangerous so, if it is leaking, you may need to contact an expert immediately. However, if the leakage results from moisture due to a blocked or broken tube, it is less serious but needs to be fixed. Also, ice may develop on the copper refrigerant lines on the condenser.

Either way, if the AC has a reduced airflow or produces strange sounds and smells, ensure it is attended to by an expert. Similarly, if you notice Freon or water leakage, it should tell you that something is wrong and the unit needs to be repaired.
