Buckle up for a summer of arts and science at The Wortham Center for the Performing Arts

Buckle up for a summer of arts and science at The Wortham Center for the Performing Arts. For the first time, beginning summer 2020, the Wortham Center is hosting two summer day camps for rising first grade through middle school students.

Part of the Wortham Center’s programming expansion and made possible by recent additions and renovations to its space, the day camps run one week in length each, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday, on separate weeks in June, July and August.

Camps are magnificent social activities for kids and vital for their growth and maturity. Photo courtesy of Bright Star Touring Theatre.

“For nearly 20 years, the Wortham Center’s Matinee Series has made it possible for 10,000 students annually to see and interact with professional performing artists in dance, theatre, music, and more,” said Rae Geoffrey, managing director at the Wortham Center. “Our 2019 expansion into the Wortham Center for the Performing Arts now allows us to broaden our vision and provide immersive, educational programming, such as classes and summer camps, that inspire the future generations of artists and arts-lovers.”

In July and August, Wortham Arts Summer Camp invites partner organization Bright Star Touring Theatre to center stage for a creative performing arts camp. Rising first through rising fourth graders can sign up for July 6-10 — and rising fifth through rising seventh-graders can take the stage from July 27-31 and Aug. 3-7. Facilitated by Bright Star’s professional art educators, students will write their show and perform it on one of the Wortham’s professional stages in an end-of-week showcase for family and friends. The Wortham Arts Summer Camp with Bright Star Touring Theatre is $300, with scholarships available through the Wortham’s Y.E.S. Fund.

Earlier in the summer, Janet’s Planet STEAM Astronaut Academy rockets through Asheville on Monday, June 22 through Friday, June 26, and serves rising third through rising seventh graders. With a focus on science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics, this camp invites children to buckle up for an out-of-this-world adventure and get inspired by all things space, aviation, science and robotics. Campers will enjoy mission-packed days zooming from Earth to the moon, Mars and beyond. At the camp’s conclusion, a lucky cadet will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center’s Space Camp in summer 2021. Janet’s Planet STEAM Astronaut Academy is $385, with scholarships available through the Wortham Center’s Y.E.S. Fund.
