Fly fishing and lures study paintings are on display at The Asheville Gallery of Art.

This collection of colorful and detailed original watercolor renderings of fishing flies and lures will surely be a hit with any fisherman or outdoors person in your life. Johnnie, who loved to go fishing with family and friends as a child, started the art collection as a request from her brother, who is an avid fisherman and hunter.

When I asked what he would like for a birthday gift, he replied, “Can you paint something a guy would like?” Interested in his answer, I questioned him further. “Like what?” He said , “a boat or a fish or a deer or something like that.” I asked if he had any kind of reference material and followed him out into the garage where he began to show me fancy fishing poles, his new boat and his fishing tackle box full of lures, hooks, flies and sinkers.

The colorful, fun, whimsical and artistically crafted flies and lures caught my attention and the rest is history. I’ve created more than 22 original watercolor paintings in the last year in various sizes and fishing themes. Many from my friend’s and client’s tackle box collections and some from those collectors who desired a commissioned painting of their own special collection. Others have offered me photos of their flies and lures as reference material.

“I’ve even painted fish and river scenes to go along with the collection, expanding it into other painting mediums like acrylic and mixed water media,” said Johnnie. Her painting sizes as well as her style, varies with the media she chooses to render her paintings.

The Fishing Flies & Lure Collection will be on display and available for purchase at the Asheville Gallery of Art for a limited time beginning in May 2016. These paintings are perfect gifts for your avid fisherman, family room, office or lake home. Sizes range from 18 x 24 inches before framing, to 5 x 7, with many 8 x 10 and 11 x 14 sizes available.
