Four Things You Should Do To Prepare For a Climb

Climbing a mountain is fun. This is because it gives you the privilege of enjoying spectacular views that can’t be experienced elsewhere. As a matter of fact, going for a climb is one of the most memorable achievements you can ever have, especially when it is well documented with video clips and pictures. However, scaling up the heights of a mountain can be a huge challenge for a beginner. This is due to the fact that you have to go through unforgiving terrain and weather. If you don’t prepare ahead of the expedition, you might have a very nasty experience. The worst is that you may not live to tell the story. Here are tips that can help you get ready for a guided climb.

  1. Gather Facts about the Mountain

It’s advisable you take time to do a thorough research on the mountain you intend to climb. This will help you to know what you will find there and how long the journey will take. At the end of it all, you will be able to make informed decisions. For instance, you will know the volume of water that you will need to pack so that you can remain hydrated throughout the hike. A climber that goes blindly may not understand what he is getting himself into and may experience obstacles that will prevent him from reaching the top of the mountain.

  1. Go for Orientation Sessions

The worst mistake you can make when going for a climb is to skip the orientation sessions. As you start planning your perfect Aconcagua climb, you should make sure you attend orientation sessions that are offered by experienced guides. The advantage of attending such sessions is that you get briefed about the condition of the path that you will take and the things that you should not do and those that you should do to remain safe. Some climbers get injured, lost or even die simply because they ignored the advice given by the guides. For instance, diverting from the main path without company increases the chances of getting lost.

  1. Train in Advance

If you want to climb a mountain without being overwhelmed by the distance and the load you will be carrying, you should consider working out in the gym. This will help in strengthening your muscles. You will also need to go for short hikes within your neighbors so that your body can get used to walking for many hours. Ideally, you practice hikes should last for at least four or five hours.

  1. Carry Crucial Items

It’s important you bring all the items that are necessary for a stress free climb to avoid inconveniencing yourself and other climbers. Some of the things that you should put in your backpack include compass, bottled water and canned food, warm clothes, sleeping bag, whistle, map, camera, waterproof matchbox, knife or multitool, first aid kit, binoculars and communication equipment. You should also inform your close friends and family about your planned climb so they will know where to start looking incase you go missing.
