Science on Yoga to Be a Better Yogi

Author: Alan Rada

Have you ever wondered if you perform Yoga Asana correctly? Have you ever thought that – being one of the most “correct” disciplines, and as a way of life – Yoga must also be practiced consciously to make the most of its virtues?

Today, we will tell you how this topic, which many of the yogis do not take into account, is so important to reach the fullness of the organism, as to master the asanas and teach the body to join our mind in one.

Scientists from the Department of Science and Technology of the Indian Institute of Science, located in Bangalore, found a method to measure asanas and see if they are being performed correctly, or there are deviations that can influence the practice itself.

Metrics Function

This recently developed mathematical metric method serves to measure the ability or special knowledge that is had regarding the stability and firmness of yoga positions.

This practice is based on Surface Electromyography (sEMG) or sEMG signals that measure and record the difference between the electrical activities of muscle groups both at rest and in motion, helping to assess the fidelity of performance.

The Method

This technique involves placing several electrodes on the muscles to be examined. Using a computerized analysis, the frequency spectrum of electrical activity is justified, together with the amplitude of the root potential of electrical action.

The qualitative verification of the results of the sEMG analysis on muscle exercise is captured by a device called “3-axis accelerometers”.

Furthermore, this can also be implemented to measure other sports performance such as NFL, even stretching, fitness or ballet disciplines. In fact there are many football athletes who practice yoga, such as Odell Beckham Jr, currently playing for the Cleveland Browns.

Even horses, before competitions, like the Breeders Cup challenge race, make relaxation exercises similar to yoga.

Obtained Results

The results obtained from the activity in which around 60 people, men, and women of different ages participated with previous instructions on the asanas to be carried out, and their orientations.

Many of us are not aware that, in order to obtain maximum benefits, asanas must be interpreted almost perfectly. With this method, you can make the necessary corrections. At the same time, with the results provided by this practice, professionals can differentiate between a novice yogi and an expert one.

The method helps to elucidate the “skill” of the yogi and guide him to an almost perfect practice denoting the muscles that the yoga practitioner can control in the different yoga asanas such as Parsvakonasana, Trikonasana, Vrikshasana, etc.

Other Projects

As commented by the DTS authorities, the Science and Technology of Yoga and Meditation (SATYAM) program, describes the projects over the past two years, research, awareness, body, practice and dynamic variants of yoga.

The effects of yoga are also studied to counteract diseases such as schizophrenia, Parkinson’s, diabetes, among others.

On the other hand, the study of the efficiency of Iyengar Yoga for the improvement of different conditions that afflict people, as well as the intervention in a dependent opium person, or use fMRI to map brain activity during meditation.

Yoga: a way to see and feel better in a world in constant transformation

While there are different activities that teach the body and mind to behave and perceive the world in a certain way, yoga is undoubtedly one of the most special activities. We are all part of everything and that everything is part of our understanding of the world around us.

Having more awareness, not only about our lives or the things that afflict us is an essential starting point to lead a healthy, spiritual and worldly life, because for now, we all live together on one planet.
