Tips for Staying Safe When Gyms do Reopen

If lockdowns and business closures threw a wrench into your workout routine, you’re probably excited to see many local gyms making plans to reopen. Though businesses are taking every precaution to protect their patrons, the risk is still there. It’s your responsibility to take the steps necessary to get your workout in without putting yourself or others at risk.

Check out the following tips to prepare yourself for going back to the gym so you can act responsibly for your own protection and to protect other gymgoers.

1. Brush Up on Rules and Safety Protocols

Before you head to the gym, check the website for safety protocols and updated rules and regulations. Gymgoers may be asked to allow temperature checks, to wear a mask, and even book a timeslot for their workout. It’s important to understand and adhere to these rules, giving yourself extra time to check-in or wait in line when capacity is limited. Follow posted guidelines and show patience and respect for employees as well as other gymgoers.

2. Maintain Social Distance and Avoid Peak Hours

Any seasoned gymgoer knows the hours before and after work tend to be the busiest, so plan your workout to avoid peak hours between 8 to 10 am and 4 to 7 pm. Everyone wants to get their workout in when it’s convenient, but you may need to adjust your schedule to reduce your risk of exposure and to ensure that you can maintain proper social distance. Stay six feet away from others as much as possible and respect other gymgoers’ right to do so as well.

3. Wear a Mask and Sanitize All Equipment

Most gyms that have already reopened or are planning to do so have mandatory mask requirements. It may be uncomfortable to exercise in a mask, but it is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and others. Keep in mind that it may take your body time to adapt to the extra breathing resistance, so start slow and take a break if you start to feel dizzy or fatigued.

4. Plan Ahead and Limit Your Exposure

Even if you already have a regimented workout plan, you should expect an adjustment period as gyms start to reopen. Adjust your workout plan for efficiency and have a backup plan in mind in case the equipment you need is in use. Limit the time you spend in the gym to reduce your exposure. If one area of the gym is particularly busy, consider moving your workout to another section.

5. Practice Good Personal Hygiene

After stashing your belongings in a locker, wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before touching any gym equipment. Use hand sanitizer between machines and sanitize your belongings such as your phone and water bottle once your workout is complete. Wash your hands as soon as you get home and shower thoroughly to wash your body and hair. This is the perfect time to incorporate skincare and hair loss treatments into your routine.

Safety is always a priority at the gym, but the word has taken on new meaning over the past few months. It’s just as important as ever to keep proper form and to wipe down equipment when you’re finished with it, but there are a few extra steps you may need to add to your gym routine these days.

Most importantly, if you start to develop symptoms, stay home! Your health and safety should always come first, even if it means skipping a workout or two.
