Why Sizing Matters – Even for Memorials

Death is inevitable and can happen to our loved ones at anytime. Our loss comes with pain and can bring up the good memories that we have of our departed loved ones. We can show our love and respect to them with a memorial that we can remember them by. Different families have their own ways of showing the deceased family member their love by making a memorial for them that is in line with their cultural traditions.

Memorials come in various types, shapes, and sizes, from the simple metal urn to the grandiose Taj Mahal. There are many ways that people preserve the memory of the faithfully departed.

Memorials help the survivors in coping with the loss of a loved one. Dealing with a death in the family or by a friend comes with grief and pain and can be quite difficult to bear at first. By building a permanent resting place for the dead, there is still some sort of a physical connection to the deceased.

For some people, the size of the memorial matters. It somehow shows the importance of the deceased to the survivors. Memorials such as the Taj Mahal and the Great Pyramids are large and quite glorious remembrances offered in loving memory of loved ones. However, it is important to keep in mind that remembering the dead need not be grand. Giving a tribute to your dead loved one can be done according to your budget and your own preferences. You do not necessarily need a very expensive memorial to show your respect to the deceased. More common types of memorials are gravestones or urns. These usually have standard sizes but can be customized with your own personal message to the departed. Cremation memorials such as keepsake urns also have a standard size established by the Cremation Association of North America. It was observed that 200 cubic inches are enough to fit the ashes of the deceased. For loved ones who are taller or have larger frames may require an urn with a bigger volume. Green Meadow has wooden cremation urns, which are around 240 cubic inches in volume, which are significantly larger than the metal cremation urns. Click here to learn more about urn sizes.

Building a memorial, whether big or small, has only one great purpose. It is to create an eternal connection to an important person or people that have passed on. It is a way for those who survived the deceased to relive the important memories and the lessons which can be passed on to the next generation of the family or the community, whether they had physically connected or not. Having memorials such as mausoleums and gravestones, allow you to have something external and physical that you can visit in times of grief or happiness that you still want to share with the departed. Keeping an urn for your loved ones’ ashes is also a way to keep a physical connection to remember them by, especially during their birthdays, anniversaries, and special days. Death of a loved one is a hard pill to swallow, but creating a memorial to honor and remember them keeps their memories alive.
